A Desert Oasis of Care: Introducing Eisenhower Health (formerly Eisenhower Medical Center)
Rancho Mirage, California
Eisenhower Health, known initially as Eisenhower Medical Center, traces its roots to 1966 when entertainer Bob Hope agreed to lend his name to a charity golf tournament and serve on the hospital board that would be built from its proceeds.

Bob and Dolores Hope generously donated the hospital’s 80-acre land and helped raise private funds for its construction. The groundbreaking ceremony in 1969 attracted numerous dignitaries, including President Richard Nixon, Vice President Spiro Agnew, Governor Ronald Reagan, and entertainers Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Gene Autry, and Lucille Ball.
Designed by Edward Durrell Stone, the main hospital opened in November 1971 with 289 beds. The facility has since expanded to 463 beds and spans 130 acres in Rancho Mirage, California.
For more than 45 years, Eisenhower Health has served the Coachella Valley region with high-quality, compassionate care. As the valley’s only not-for-profit hospital, it has evolved into a dynamic healthcare complex offering state-of-the-art diagnostic, treatment, and emergency facilities.
The landscaping at Eisenhower Health complements the institution’s healing mission, creating a therapeutic environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
The grounds feature a thoughtful variety of desert-adapted plants, trees, and water elements that enhance the overall aesthetic while providing benefits for mental and physical well-being. These carefully designed outdoor spaces incorporate diverse textures and colors that reflect the natural beauty of the surrounding desert landscape while offering accessible pathways, shaded seating areas, and tranquil retreats.
The integration of these natural elements contributes to stress reduction and improved mental health for those navigating the healthcare experience. It embodies the institution’s holistic approach to healing, which extends beyond traditional medical care to encompass the restorative power of thoughtfully designed environments.

Creating Healing Landscaping
Eisenhower Health’s landscape design creates a distinctive healing environment that honors Rancho Mirage’s unique desert character while supporting the medical center’s wellness and compassionate care mission. The thoughtfully planned grounds transform the 130-acre campus into a therapeutic desert sanctuary.

Throughout the medical campus, Conserve LandCare has created microenvironments that balance beauty with functionality, featuring native and adaptive plantings that thrive in the Coachella Valley’s arid climate.
Shaded walkways lined with date palms guide visitors between medical buildings, while intimate garden spaces with desert-appropriate flowering plants and architectural agaves provide peaceful retreats for reflection and respite.
Water features are strategically placed to create cooling effects without excessive consumption, enhancing the sensory experience while demonstrating environmental stewardship. This integration of healing landscapes with world-class healthcare facilities embodies Eisenhower Health’s holistic approach to wellness amid the breathtaking backdrop of the Santa Rosa Mountains, making the campus a true oasis of healing in the heart of Rancho Mirage.
